How I Got It Wrong... But Got It Right!
Hello everyone, I'm Graham Sale, the creator of our friend Boneless Chuck.
So how does the idea of Boneless Chuck occur to someone? And how does a llittle, pink, pudgy, bald, bean-bag character come to bring laughter and love to people around the world?  Comfort to cancer patients?  Work with the police?  Be photographed in over 40 countries, on 7 continents and in every state?  Go to Olympics and Elvis' grave?  Ride in the Sturgis Biker Rally?  The answer is: Only with the love and kindness of others.  Chuck has evolved and changed over the years because of his relationships with people, the life they've given him and the meaning they've found in him. Today he's loved and adored, but the circumstances that inspired his creation were not so loving!

Chuck's Story: A Little Character...Goes a Long Way.
NYC - July 1986. I was an illustrator in New York City. One hot, sticky, Friday in July, I was rushing around the city to meetings with art directors. The heat and subways were smuthering, but somehow I was on time to each appoinment - only to be told by every receptionist, "I'm so sorry, but he left early for the weekend.  Didn't he call you?"  No he didn't - and neither did you for that matter thank you very much. I would've lliked to start my weekend early too, but I had appointments.  When I returned home I was filled with distinctly unloving thoughts...

At home, I turned on the T.V., cranked the air-conditioner, grabbed a beer and checked my phone messages. One was from a friend complaining about her lousy boyfriend - a subject I was sick of.  She always asked for advice but never took it. Another was from a friend who hated his job and evil boss. Like her, he complained to anyone with ears. But did he ever look for another job? Never.

As I erased their messages, the T.V. announced a "Big sale this week on "boneless chuck". The words struck me. I thought, "There must be a big sale on boneless chuck because I've been dealing with nothing but Boneless Chucks all day long!"  The image of a freezer full of boneless, spineless, wimps
made me laugh out loud.  So I drew a quick sketch...and twenty minutes later I had a crazy idea.

I dashed back outside into the heat and returned shortly with some pink fabric, thread and dried beans, After several hours of trial-by-error, hand-sewing 101... Boneless Chuck was born!  Now like Ulysses, Chuck's amazing journey would begin.

From Here.................................................................To Here. Who could have imagined?

Little Kaleb suffers from shaken baby syndrome. Chuck is his guardian angel.

So how did I get it wrong?  Go to the next page for the rest of the story....
